On January 28, 2017, the Year of the Rooster begins. It’s an ancient Chinese tradition that, much like an American New Year’s celebration, celebrates the bounty of the previous year and looks forward to the coming year. Traditionally, it’s a time to celebrate revered ancestors, but in modern culture it’s also a time of reflection, celebration, and thanksgiving.
In order to mark the years, the Chinese assign an animal to a particular year. For 2017, the rooster is the new animal of the year and has particular positive characteristics that are highly regarded and sought after. In Chinese lore, roosters are known for being observant, creative, hardworking, confident, courageous, and honest – traits that also define great businesses and even greater teams.
So What Does the Year of the Rooster Have to do With YCP?
Here at YCP we have seven core values that permeate and influence all of our actions. We don’t hang these values up on the walls, we internalize them and let them shape our decisions – defining and motivating our every action. And, coincidentally, a few of the Rooster’s positive characteristics align with our own values.
We understand that no team is perfect, but as long as we’re striving for a goal of continuous improvement we’re on the right track. And while some look to the new year and the symbols of the new year with wishful thinking, we look at our pre-established values and look ahead to 2017 with a plan to sharpen and strengthen them in order to make our team and ultimately our clients more successful.
In the Year of the Rooster, integrity is honored and celebrated. At YCP, our focus on integrity means keeping our promises to our clients and our teammates. As a team, we strive to maintain a spirit of transparent honesty in everything we do.
Integrity is a foundational, enduring value that goes hand in hand with trust. Without trust individuals and teams are rendered ineffective. We go to great lengths at YCP to be 100% honest with those we care about – our clients and each other.
Appropriately, a Chinese proverb illustrates this fact with the age-old saying, “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.”
The rooster is famous for being one of the most dependable creatures on the earth. Before the invention of alarm clocks, roosters were consistently depended upon for their prompt and effective wake up calls.
Dependability, which takes on the form of a hardworking team, is the next value highlighted in the new year. Our mission is simple: communicate proactively, meet every deadline, and deliver what we promise to our clients and our teammates.
With exciting new projects in the works and on the horizon, we’re starting now to plan for the busy times and work on honing our skills so that we have answers to the difficult questions and can deliver the best products to our clients – because that’s just the right thing to do.
The final characteristic of the rooster that parallels our core values is creativity. To us, creativity is problem-solving, and we believe in solving the impossible. We never settle for the first, easiest, or quickest solution. We carefully analyze, research, and create custom solutions for our clients – and for each other. We’re always pushing and searching for ideas – old and new – to turn them into solutions that will solve even the most puzzling problems.
And the good news about creativity is this: we can influence those around us to be more creative. Creativity doesn’t happen in a silo. It’s evidenced best when many people put their heads together and work as a team to create the best possible final outcome.
So take a cue from the Rooster of the Chinese New Year. How are you going to live with integrity this year? Who will you be more dependable to? Who will you inspire with your creative spirit? Spend some time reflecting on your personal core values and determine how you’re going to strengthen and grow them in the coming year. We know we're going to be doing the same thing!
