The Importance of Finding Your Niche

As students, we are faced with the challenging question of whether or not to participate in an internship. Professors often push students to take on an internship simply for résumé purposes, but I think participating in an internship goes beyond the idea of just “gaining experience” for your résumé – internships serve as an opportunity for students to really seek out different industries to find their niche!

For me, I had the opportunity to participate in three marketing internships throughout the course of my college career to really test out my skills and find my interests. But the thing that really stood out to me about YCP that differed from other internships is their strong ability to work as a team. In the last 12 weeks, I’ve seen the team initiate campaigns to promote tire safety to teen drivers; I’ve seen the team tell digital stories in order to help college students in need of scholarships; I’ve seen the team build websites in order to better communicate a company’s vision; but most importantly, I’ve seen the team be an actual team. At YCP, you have the opportunity to be a part of a team where each member uses their unique set of skills for each project and each ad campaign.

In many ways, I still have a lot to learn about working at an ad agency – but these last two months have been extremely beneficial in taking the elements I learned from my college classes and applying them in my own unique way! And that’s really the true importance of an internship - you not only have the opportunity to learn from the experts, you also have the opportunity to inspire those around you with your own set of talents and strengths! And ultimately, you have the opportunity to find your niche and run with it!
